Eight tourism highlights that will surprise the guests of Ventspils
Ventspils

With the arrival of the new year, the Tourism Information Centre of Ventspils wants to share news concerning the urban infrastructure and the development of tourism services.

1.For Ventspils, this year will be marked by a very special and long-awaited event – opening of the Science Centre “VIZIUM” in early June.

The Science Centre “VIZIUM” will have a special role in the development of educational services for children, young people, teachers, and adults, becoming an education, recreation, and tourism centre of Latvian and also European interest. The Science Centre will seek to raise interest in science and STEM[1] disciplines among young people, as well as to explain science to children and young people in simple and understandable terms. Visitors will be able to learn more about science and technological developments by means of 80 interactive exhibits. These exhibits are to be integrated into a total of 22 different learning programmes aimed at acquiring STEM disciplines. Furthermore, the Science Centre will offer science shows, creative workshops, a lab, a conference room, training rooms, and a prototyping laboratory. In addition to the conference room with a capacity of 75 persons, the Science Centre will also provide catering in a large and modern café and during the summer also outside on the terrace. It will be a perfect place for outdoor activities, while revealing one of the most exclusive and most beautiful city panoramas.

Worth mentioning is the façade of the Science Centre, which is made of glass with copper finishing sheets. In order to prevent the copper from losing its dark golden tone over the time, these metal sheets have been specially treated and tested in a specialized laboratory by the acceleration method thus ensuring that the material retains its original appearance for many years to come. This is the first time this type of material is used in Latvia. Made of more than 600 000 Murano glass mosaic tiles, the floor of the lobby is designed as a world map with a total area of 365 m2. Since the lobby floor has a round shape, also the world map was designed as a globe that will also be used as one of the exhibits to teach geography – continents and countries, to be specific. Ventspils is located in the centre of the map. At this very spot, beneath the ground, there is a time capsule with a message for future generations built in the foundations.

Ventspils always stands out with its clean areas, well-maintained infrastructure, and new developments in the city, and this year is no exception.

This year, it is planned to extend the parking lot and to construct a bike path with two sections, starting on Bangu iela and stretching from Talsu iela until the current bike path, and then continuing from the centre of Staldzene until the parking lot on Staldzene beach.

[1]   Refers to any subjects on science and technology (STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to explain us the world around us. Physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology describe the natural laws and processes, while informatics and computing give us an in-depth understanding of the operation of technology that we use to work and create new things. The knowledge on these topics significantly facilitates our daily life, and actually we use it on a daily basis, even though we might not realize it right away. Therefore, STEM skills help us with our daily activities.
