Invitation by the potter of the House of Crafts
Skolas iela 3, Ventspils

Ever wondered how bowls and pots are made in the pottery of the House of Crafts? Now, here is your chance to try your hand at it on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., under the guidance of Jānis Kupčs (on 11, 13, 18 and 20 January). Previous registration is required, calling 26156543.

How does a simple lump of clay turn into a cup of hot tea that warms our hands in cold wintertime? How many times it has been processed, fired, and glazed? You will learn all that and more in the pottery from the potter Jānis Kupčs, who has mastered his skills after graduating from the Department of Ceramics at (former) Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts and Tallinn Academy of Arts. He skilfully works with different ceramic materials, such as clay, porcelain, stone, and fire clay. One of his passions are masonry heaters and their replication based on historic reference materials, as well as the development of pottery glaze, using raw materials available to potters in the 17th – 18th century. In the Room of Coins, located on the second floor of the Castle of the Livonian Order in Ventspils, you can see a replica of a Renaissance tile stove, but in the reconstructed building on the corner of Tirgus iela and Skolas iela – a masonry heater from the late 18th century – early 19th century. As soon as the Museum of Interior Design of 17th – 19th century located in Liepāja, Kungu iela 24, is open to visitors, it will also have a glazed masonry heater of 17th – 18th century on display, which is made using both tiles made more than 300 years ago and those made by contemporary masters. The ceramics by J. Kupčs are on view in Ventspils Museum, Riga Porcelain Museum, and Mark Rothko Art Centre.

The Ventspils Museum is operating in the so called “green” mode, which means that the workshop is available only to individual visitors, families, and households, whereas the visitors are required to present an interoperable certificate.Ventspils Museum
