Užava Nature Reserve and grey dune

The Užava Nature Reserve occupies mainly a dune strip and stretches for 5 km along the Baltic Sea coast to the south of the Užava river estuary.

Užava is very rich in terms of natural rarities. And that is why this area is included in the European network of protected nature areas or NATURA 2000 sites. In order to preserve the unique nature of Užava, the Užava Nature Reserve was established in 1992, and in 2004 it was expanded to an area of 3,225 ha, of which 1,256 ha is land.

The vast, pebble desert-like landscape of grey dunes is so unusual that it surprises everyone who sees it for the first time. Several kilometres long and several hundred meters wide pebble fields, where the sand carnation grows, but lichens form yellow, green, grey and black lace patterns, which are not visible elsewhere in Latvia, because the pebble deserts around Užava are the only home for eleven lichen species.

The pride of Užava inhabitants is coastal snakeroot – Eryngium maritimum. The name of this plant goes around the parish like a legend, because only the rare and persistent were lucky enough to see it. In Latvia, the plant can be found in two places, and one of them is Užava. The coastal snakeroot is included in the Latvian Red List of Threatened Species, and the Užava Nature Reserve was originally established to preserve this species.

Noteworthy are the centennial pine forests of Užava.
