Sārnate settlement

Sārnate settlement is located in a peat bog on the coast of the Baltic Sea (then Litorina Sea) in Užava parish of Ventspils region.

The settlement is one of the best-studied pit-comb ceramic cultural settlements in Latvia, which gives an idea of the living conditions of people in the Middle Neolithic period (3400-2300 BC) and the environmental conditions of that time - climate, landscapes, plants and animal world. Thanks to the swampy soil, the remains of prehistoric dwellings have been well preserved, because in such conditions the wood and its objects are naturally preserved.

Archaeological excavations were made in 1938 - 1940 (leader E. Šturms), 1949 and 1953-1959 (leader L. Vankina). 25 separate so-called Sārnate-type dwellings, exposed remains of square buildings with fireplaces made of trees, bark and sand in them, which testify to their belonging to the Narva culture. Paddles, spears, bows, skis, fishnets, dugout boats, carved dishes, hoes, wooden spoons with bird's head shanks, nut-pounding cobs (in some houses a layer of waternut shells > 40 cm thick), bird and animal figures were found, as well as oval bowls and point-bottomed pots, so-called Sārnate-type ceramics and pit-comb ceramics. Exposed remains of the sanctuary with a primitive image of a wooden idol and an amber processing workshop (where buttons of different sizes, beads and pendants were made), as well as 15 lightly designed round and oval dwellings belonging to the culture of pit-comb ceramics.

The findings of the Sārnate type dwellings indicate the transition of the ancient inhabitants to primitive hoe farming.

The animal bones found indicate that wild boars, red deer, elk, deer, especially seals were hunted. Fur animals have also been hunted - bears, martens, badgers, beavers, as well as birds. Hunting weapons were wooden spears, bows with arrows, boomerangs. In winter, hunters have used skis. Fishing and the collection of wild plants have played an important role in obtaining food. The people of Sārnate had especially abundantly used the waternuts obtained in the lakes, which are eaten both cooked and fresh.
