Pope castle mound

Pope castle mound is the highest place in Ventspils region - 62.5 m above sea level. It is formed on the steep edge of an abrasive cliff with a 25-m high slope. The castle mound is located about 600 m west of the Pope stage and 100 m west of the manor cemetery guardhouse, which today bears the name “Pilskalni”  (“Castle mound”).

The Pope castle mound was surveyed in 1869 by the pastor and castle mound explorer August von Raizon and pastor August Bielenstein. In 1870, it was studied by the artist Julius Döring, and in 1923 it was surveyed by Ernests Brastiņš. In 2017, probing works were carried out on the Pope castle mound plateau under the guidance of researchers from the Institute of Latvian History of the University of Latvia, which revealed a not very intensive cultural layer. It was found that the culture layer is light grey, indistinct, about 0.20 m thick on average and about 0.40 m thick in some places.

The three slopes of the castle mound are naturally steep, but in the eastern part, it is protected by a 30 m long, 1.5 - 3 m high dike. In 1998, 1 km south-west of the castle mound, previously unknown Curonian Late Iron Age cremation sites were discovered, which could be related to the 13th century - around 1230, when the village of Pope (Popen) was mentioned in the documents on the division of the Curonian lands.

According to legends, it was known that until the 17th century, there was a monastery on Pope castle mound, and a branched linden that was considered a sacred tree grew in its yard. The inhabitants of Pope remember that the linden was special and protected in the seventies of the last century.
