Lea Bertucci from USA to Perform in Ventspils
Samedi , 13. Avril. Theatre House "Juras Varti", Karlīnes iela 40

On April 13, within the framework of contemporary authors music cycle “Ma”, composer and wind instrumentalist Lea Bertucci from the United States of America will perform her only concert in Latvia at the New Hall of Theatre House “Jūras vārti” in Ventspils.

Lea Bertucci is a composer and performer from New York, her creative work is related to exploring the interaction between acoustic phenomenon and biological resonance. Along with the attention paid to wind instruments (alto saxophone and bass clarinet), Lea Bertucci’s creative work often contains multi-channel speaker installations, electro-acoustic feedback and magnetic audiotape loops and collages. Conceptual and experimental approach to playing instruments, acoustics and composition, overturning musical expectations of many – this is how Lea Bertucci’s creative work could be described in one sentence.

The musician’s discography consists of several solo and creative collaboration records, however, the most attention of listeners and the biggest appreciation of critics was received by “Metal Aether”, which was released early last year. L. Bertucci spent her childhood in New York’s Hudson Valley, where she became acquainted with additional colours and possibilities presented to various space sounds at abandoned cement mines, for that reason the artist has chosen her latest album’s recording place with special consideration. The album was recorded at an abandoned military base in France and art venue “ISSUE Project Room” in New York.

“Her extended technique for alto sax is at once swarming and clarifying, like dissolving clouds. These droning meditations offer disquieting jolts along with microtones that are hypnotic and grounding. Bertucci incorporates prepared piano and vibraphone, processed with electronics and tape, along with field recordings made anywhere from Mayan pyramids to New York subways. Harmonics accumulate and stretch toward infinity. Bertucci’s noise feels untethered and limitless,” writes Jenn Pelly for “Pitchfork”.

The concert in Ventspils will be the first and until now the only Lea Bertucci’s performance in Latvia. This will be the second of spring concerts within the framework of cycle “Ma”, following the upcoming Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch’s stage performance at the New Hall of Theatre House “Jūras vārti” on March 3.

Tickets to Lea Bertucci’s concert on April 13 at the New Hall of Theatre House “Jūras vārti” are available starting January 29 (12 noon) at the box office of Theatre House “Jūras vārti” and other sales points of “Biļešu Paradīze”. The first 30 tickets are available for a special price – 7.00 EUR. As the concert approaches, the price of tickets will rise.

Limited amount of unnumbered seats for sale.

Since the opening of the New Hall at Theatre House “Jūras vārti” in early 2015, chamber format concerts of various music genres – contemporary academic, jazz, experimental, improvised, avant-garde and others – are held along with other events. Let us remember the recently held keyboard music festival “TAKTS” and its introductory concert series “UZTAKTS” at the Theatre House “Jūras vārti”. “Ma” (meaning “but” from Italian music terminology) is a contemporary authors music concert cycle started in 2018, within the framework of which many foreign and Latvian musicians and composers of various genres have already visited Ventspils – Czech violinist Iva Bittová, Australian percussionist Jim White and Greek lute musician George Xylouris or duet “Xylouris White”, pianist and composer Luke Howard from Australia and cellist Clarice Jensen from USA. Four concerts will be held in relation to the cycle “Ma” in 2019 as well.
