In order to promote the development of sports in Ventspils and outstanding achievements of Ventspils athletes, the creation of a new indoor skate park and volleyball courts is planned at Kr. Valdemāra Street 12A, informs the Ventspils Municipal Administration.
At the end of January, a building permit was issued for the design of the building reconstruction at Kr.Valdemāra Street 12A, with the intention of installing a 600 m2 indoor skate park in the building in the future, as well as 2 volleyball courts with ceiling heights of 6 and 8 meters. The main function of the beach-type volleyball courts will be to provide athletes with a modern winter training base, with a small seating area for the convenience of spectators. The development of the construction project will be completed within the next 8 months, with construction work expected to begin in 2024, if the issue of financing is resolved.
The creation of an indoor skate park in Ventspils is still a pressing issue for residents, as the municipality continues to receive suggestions from young athletes and their parents about the need for such a park to develop children's talents in sports. Indoor skate parks and volleyball courts are located in several cities in Latvia and elsewhere in the Baltics, where even world-class competitions are regularly held. Initially, the indoor skate park was located on Ganību Street, but since 2010 the indoor skate park has been located on Lāčplēša Street. According to the Ventspils Olympic Center, these premises were rented for the needs of the skate park, but after the lease expired, the owners of the premises did not extend the lease agreement due to other business plans.
In order to continue developing extreme sports in Ventspils, it was necessary to acquire premises suitable for a skate park. Through a real estate exchange, on August 2021, 26, the Ventspils City Municipality acquired ownership rights to the building at Kr.Vademāra Street 12A, and the design of an indoor skate park was immediately initiated to ensure the opportunity to play sports not only in summer, but all year round, including in winter and in any weather conditions.
