Pope Manor Park and Alley

Pope Manor Park, which is the oldest type of landscape parks in the Eastern Baltic, is designed to be enjoyed in every season. In spring, the park of Pope Manor is especially beautiful. In this time of the year, a variety of bright flowers grow here - common toothwort, dog’s mercury, anemone hepatica, wood anemone, sweet violet, lesser celandine, yellow star-of-Bethlehem, yellow wood anemone, fumewort and others. And in early June, martagon lilies bloom glamorously.

There are many large “secular” trees in the park of Pope manor. In nature, they can be recognized by their large size, as well as a green sign with an oak leaf symbol on the tree trunk. Large trees can be found in the park and alley of Pope Manor, as well as in the nearby forest and surrounding plantations. In the territory of Pope manor, the following trees reached the dimensions necessary to be called a “secular tree” - oaks, European beech, European white spruce, common yew, broadleaf and common linden. Among the large trees, there are also wild-hive pines, which are relatively rare today.

European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is widely found in the park of the Pope manor and the surrounding plantations. Beeches in Pope Manor have very favourable growing conditions, as evidenced by several beeches that have reached the size of a large tree, as well as new self-seeding beeches, which are constantly spreading.

In the garden of the southern side of Pope Manor grows one of the largest purple-leaf beeches in Latvia, which has become a symbol of Pope parish - its branch is depicted on the coat of arms of the parish.

Although the total circumference of this tree at the ground exceeds more than four metres, it has not yet reached the size of a large “secular” tree, since it has several trunks and they must be measured individually. Currently, the thickest of them has a circumference of 3.17 metres.

The road to Pope Manor leads through a tree alley, which is the only alley in Latvia declared as an architectural monument of national significance. Alley plantings were performed at different times. The oldest plantations are in the section from the pub to the Manor house, and the newer plantations are in the section from the church to the Manor’s cemetery. Also, in the middle of the 20th century, new rows of trees were planted in the territory of Pope Manor.
