AC- 14 Anchor

There are currently two anchors of this type on display in the Seaside Park: VZBM 9297 (4.5 t), manufactured in Germany in the late 20th century and pulled up from the Ventspils roadstead in October 2004, and VZBM 8844 (9.5 t), pulled up from the bottom of the Baltic Sea on 10 June 2002.

Due to the growing intensity of shipping in the 20th century, it was necessary to hold the ships in water also in unfavourable hydro-meteorological and navigation conditions. Many coastal countries commenced extensive research and testing to manufacture anchors, which, in terms of the holding power capacity, would supersede the Hall anchors. Significant research in this respect was also commenced by the British Admiralty in the 50’s of the 20th century, resulting in an anchor construction called AC-11 and AC-14. The holding power of this type of anchors reached 13 – 17.5 thousand kg per 1000 kg of their own weight. In 1960, they were recognized as the standard for the warships in the Royal Navy to be built (instead of the Admiralty Stockless Standard (ASS) anchors). In 1964, they were approved in Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.

The largest AC-14 anchors are approved as HHP (High Holding Power Stockless) anchors commonly used on tankers and other large vessels. The largest anchors of this type are manufactured with a weight of up to 25 t.
