Ugāle castle mound

Ugāle castle mound is an archaeological site of national importance. It has already been mentioned as an object of interest in the address books of baronial manors. In 1851, the family cemetery of Ugāle Baron Dietrich Johann von Behr was established on the castle mound. Thus, the castle mound has lost its original appearance. Information about the location of Ugāle castle mound and belonging to a certain model of castle mounds is contradictory. In 1922, the researcher of Latvian antiquity E. Brasliņš admitted that the highest place of the castle mound is located on a promontory between two ravines that surround the castle mound. Ugāle castle mound has been repeatedly inspected by an expedition of Ventspils Museum staff. Findings (11th - 13th century bronze neck ring, lozenge-shaped pendants and others) can be seen in the Ventspils Museum.

Legend says that instead of the cemetery there was a Latvian castle that sank. The men, at the order of the baron, tried to dig the castle out. They dug day and night, but then a green-dressed roe buck ran past them and said they should stop digging, otherwise things could go bad.

Thus castle has remained underground. Another legend tells that a deep river flowed along the castle mound. Barges sailed on it. Pines had grown from the masts of a sunken boat and they can still be seen here.
