Friday, February 23, at 18:00 PM on the 2nd floor of the concert hall “Latvija” (green room) there will be a meeting with the author of the book "Gaist Livu dziesma debesīs", Liv culture researcher Baiba Šuvcāne.
The conversation will be moderated by musicologist and former leader of the Livonian ensemble “Līvlist” Zigurds Ete. Several amateur groups from Ventspils whose repertoire includes songs in the Livonian language will participate – the mixed choir “Līvzeme”, the women's choir “Lība”, the Livonian folklore group “Kāndla” and the Livonian ensemble “Rāndalist”.
The book tells about the activities of the ensemble “Līvlist”. The ensemble was founded and operated in Riga, and its first leader was Dzintars Kļaviņš – the long-time director of the Ventspils Music Secondary School – and his wife Dzidra Kļaviņš. Thanks to Dzintars Kļaviņš’s enthusiasm for traveling through Liv villages and recording Liv oral literature, we have such a rich cultural heritage of this small nation today.
The book tells the story of the Livonian community over many years. The work is based on the diary written by the ensemble's singer Valda Marija Šuvcāne. The story is also supplemented by the message and insights of Dzintars Kļaviņš, memories and images of other ensemble members.
The event is free of charge. It is organized by the Ventspils Music Library and supported by the Ventspils Music Secondary School and the Concert Hall “Latvija”.
