Exhibition on the Road
Tuesday, 23. July — Sunday, 20. October. Livonian Order Castle, 17 Jana Street

The exhibition “Ceļā. V doroge. On the Road” was opened in the exhibition hall of the Castle of the Livonian Order on July 23.

The exhibition “Ceļā. V doroge. On the Road” – travel costumes, documents and accessories from the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation, the Rybinsk Museum and Ventspils Museum collection, end of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th century.

Based on exhibits from the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation collection, the exhibition is dedicated to the 115th anniversary since the Moscow – Ventspils – Rybinsk railway line was opened in 1904. The railway line was built to make the port of Ventspils a modern export destination for Russian agricultural products. However, the boom was very short, only ten years – until the First World War.

The exhibition features more than 50 travel costumes from the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation collection, as well as plenty of special travel accessories. The oldest travel costume in the exhibition is from 1870 – it is a wool cutaway coat, but the newest – beachwear with silk cord finish from 1916.

The exhibition is also enriched with items from the Ventspils Museum collection – trunks and travel bags, as well as visual information material – pictures of Ventspils railway station and travel documents. The visual informative section is complemented by materials from the Rybinsk Museum (Russia). The introduction of the exhibition consists of a virtual traveler's diary, which was created in August 2018, overcoming the distance from Ventspils to Rybinsk.

The dynamic map displayed in the exhibition hall is a theoretical representation of the map of the Moscow – Ventspils – Rybinsk railway line in 1909.

The exhibition “On the Road” is a kind of symbolic representation for a person's life course, travel culture and all that unites travellers – curiosity, joy and tolerance.

The exhibition in Ventspils Museum’s Castle of the Livonian Order will be available for viewing until October 20, 2019, entrance to the opening event of the exhibition – by invitation.
