"Saint Valentine" winter tournament at the Livonian Order Castle

Medieval readings, music, dances, Rose battles, workshops of jewellery and artisans.

The Ventspils Livonian Order Castle for the third year now is the only place in Latvia where knights, their ladies, lovers of old music and dance, people with special knowledge of the Medieval history and artisans creating fine jewellery arrive in the middle of winter to enjoy coming of St. Valentine’s Day in the atmosphere of the 15th century.

On 9 February 2019, between twelve and five in the afternoon, the clubs of the ancient battles from the entire territory of Latvia and also Estonia - Comturia Wynda, Rodenpoys, Exercitus Rigensis, Senzeme, Soldknechte (Estonia) and other enthusiastic friends in sword will occupy the castle of the 13th century. Demonstration of the battle techniques will take place, and the visitors will be familiarized with the events of Vastlāvji (the English equivalent is Shrovetide) celebration in Livonia in the 15th century. For example, duels between the knights took place during the long celebration of two weeks before the Grand Fasting, which symbolized the Carnival (Vastlāvis) and the Fasting or, despite the discouragement by the church, fir trees decorated with roses were placed in the city squares, then lit up, and newlyweds holding hands were jumping over this bonfire just like during the Ligo Night. The fortune-teller Brother Ivars will handle the matters of heart.

The Medieval readings will start at one o’clock at the Chapter of Priests' Hall with the participation of the priest and Dr.hist.eccl. Andris Priede, who will tell about the relics cult in the Medieval Europe, while Gunta Deģe with an extensive knowledge regarding Medieval Times will familiarize visitors with the luxury laws during the Medieval Times, and Laura Aksika and Agnese Skudra, the members of the old dance group Ballare, will tell about clothing in Livonia in the 15th century. An exhibition - photo story The Night’s Wardrobe will also tell about clothes and their wearing.

In addition to readings with musical (old music group SKANDI) and dance (old music ensemble Ballare) breaks, all day long the visitors will be provided with an opportunity to watch and participate - in the workshop of jewellery by the blacksmith Guntis Jakubovskis, the workshop of mosaics by the glazier Marta Ģibiete, the workshop of the pilgrimage symbols of the tin moulder Jānis Kupčs, the workshop of the bone and horn jewellery specialist Viesturs Āboliņš and the workshop of leather goods by Santa Dalbe. To ensure that the visitors in additional to their spiritual needs satisfy also their cravings for food, the cafe Elizabete during the tournament will provide dishes from the castle hearth.

Admission in the Winter Tournament with the tickets of the Ventspils Museum - EUR 1.50 (students, pupils, pensioners), EUR 2.50 (adults); EUR 5 (family ticket = 2 adults + 1-5 school-age children).
