On 24 September at 17.00, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theatre will host the ballet performance “Nijinsky” by one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world today, Marco Goecke.

“Nijinsky is a contemporary ballet by choreographer Marco Goecke about ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. It reveals the most important moments of Nijinsky’s life on and off stage, showing the close connection between art and madness.

For ten years Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) was the leading soloist and choreographer of the legendary Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev. His virtuoso leaps and androgynous charisma charmed audiences, while his daring choreographies provoked scandals. He spent the last thirty years of his life in mental health institutions.

“Nijinsky” had its world premiere at Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart in 2016 and has since toured extensively around the world. 2017. In 2017, Marco Goecke received the Italian Dance Award Danza & Danza in the category Best Choreography of the Year. The production has also received the Latvian Dance Award 2021-2022 in the category Ballet Production or Event.

Marco Goecke is one of the most acclaimed choreographers in the world today. He is currently Artistic Director of the Hannover Ballet, Artist in Residence at Stuttgart’s Gauthier Dance and Associate Choreographer at the renowned Nederlands Dance Theater. He choreographs new works for leading European dance companies including the Paris Opera Ballet, Vienna State Ballet and Bavarian State Ballet. Goecke has created more than 60 works, but many of them are also danced by companies for which they were not originally created, such as in Tel Aviv, São Paulo, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, National Ballet of Canada, Munich Ballet Theatre, Finnish National Theatre in Helsinki, Zurich Ballet, German Opera am Rhein in Düsseldorf.

“Marco Goecke is a choreographer with a unique signature. He is one of the most relevant choreographers right now, many of the world’s leading ballets want to have his work in their repertoire, but not all of them succeed. Goecke is the champion of the number of movements per second. His choreography is always a great challenge for dancers,” says Aivars Leimanis, Latvian ballet legend and Artistic Director of the Latvian National Ballet.

The performance is recommended for audiences from 16 years of age.

The guest performance is organised by SIA“Kurzemes filharmonija”, and funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Ventspils State City Municipality.
