At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the owners of the Gārzde, Zūru and Tārgales manors, brothers Friedrich and Werner von Bucholz and their neighbor Wilhelm von Koškul began to breed wild boars (which had not been found there before) and red deer in the open air. They established a paddock of approximately 5 ha and in January 1911 released the first 16 red deer, which had been brought from the hunting farm of the Russian imperial court.
