Cinema has been shown in Ventspils Old Town, at Pils Street 28, for more than 100 years. The cinema building is closely associated with the creation of the first feature film made in Latvia, “Where is the Truth”, directed by the original owner of the building, Gillioms Berlīns. Actors from the Ventspils Theatre and cinema employees participated in the roles. Previously, the cinema was called “Ziemeļpols”. Later, it was renamed “Kolizeja”, “Aina”, “Komjaunietieti”! Since 1997, the cinema has acquired its new name – cinema “RIO”.

Step by step, the cinema was improved at its own expense. In the spring of 2013, extensive reconstruction and digitization works were carried out in the large hall of the cinema. In addition, improvements were also made to the sound system and a modern cinema screen was installed, which allows viewers to enjoy a high-quality image and, with the help of sound effects, enjoy every moment of the film. In the winter of 2014, the small hall was completely rebuilt and renovated so that viewers could see an even wider range of films.

The cinema "RIO" currently has two halls: a large hall with a total number of seats - 240 seats and a small hall with a total number of seats - 90 seats. (The small hall is not accessible by wheelchair). The comfort of the audience has also been thought of, which everyone can enjoy in new and comfortable chairs. A big surprise for those who love watching movies on the balcony. Now the balcony of the cinema "RIO" has a VIP area with comfortable chairs and two-seater sofas, which allows you to enjoy the latest films with greater comfort.
