The castle was built at the turn of the 13th–14th centuries and was used until the 16th century. From the 14th to the 16th centuries – the administrative center of the Courland bishopric. The foundations of the castle and fragments of the Great Round Tower and the Kaunas Tower have survived to this day. A stage and a gazebo have been arranged next to the castle ruins.
