Last week, the municipal SIA “Ventspils Labiekārtūšanas Kombināts” in collaboration with SIA “Ziedu dizains” began decorating Ventspils’ figurative flower sculptures in winter. The city’s largest flower sculpture “Puķu Govs” will also get its own special winter seasonal decoration, which will be illuminated by 7000 LED lights this winter, and its neck will be decorated with a folk patterned belt with a bell.
As is customary every year, the “Flower Cow” changes its outfit twice a year – in the spring it is decorated with floral clothes, but when the cold season sets in, it is covered with a soil-strengthening BonTerra geomat, through which light bulbs are pulled. This work requires patience and care, and is carried out by the municipal SIA “Ventspils labiekārtūšanas kombināts” flower girls or employees of the Greening Department in cooperation with long-term partner SIA "Ziedu dizains".
Each of the 7000 LED lights is hand-attached to the coconut fiber shell so that the gusty winds characteristic of the city and other external conditions do not affect the safety and longevity of the electrical installation. In addition, this year, the cow's neck will be adorned with a folk-patterned belt with a bell - as a complement to the winter image of the flower sculpture and a symbolic tribute to our country.
The four-meter-high and seven-meter-long flower sculpture in the shape of a cow in the Sarkanmuiža meadow was unveiled in 2012, in preparation for the tenth anniversary of the Ventspils Cow Parade. The flower cow has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Ventspils every year, delighting Ventspils residents and city guests in all seasons. In the summer of 2025, the cow was decorated with 7000 icicles and balsams in white, red and pink shades.
