On February 26 at 5:30 p.m., the State Plant Protection Service (SPPS) traveling exhibition “Beautiful and Dangerous Plant Pests” will be opened at the Seaside Open-Air Museum (Riņķa Street 2).

What you can see:

  • 22 impressive macro photographs of pests;
  • 5 information boards with explanations about particularly dangerous quarantine organisms in Latvia and the world;
  • 2 wooden collection boxes with real insect specimens.

The exhibition was created in 2020 as part of the International Year of Plant Health. The exhibition features photographs by forest entomologist Dr. biol. Agnis Šmits, showing beautiful, but dangerous insects for plants, up close. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to get acquainted with detailed information about quarantine organisms that are particularly dangerous for plants, which are found in Latvia and the world.

Pests, diseases, bacteria, viruses and microscopic fungi can be a deadly threat to plants. Climate change or reckless human actions can contribute to the spread of plant-dangerous organisms, which can cause great damage to the environment and economic losses to agriculture and forestry.

The aim of the exhibition is to invite the public to think about the importance of plant health and to encourage everyone to act in a way that does not pose a threat to plants in Latvia, for example, not to bring home “green souvenirs” from a trip – plants, seeds, fruits and flowers, not to order plants online without a phytosanitary certificate or plant passport, not to purchase untested plants or their seeds. By protecting plants, we protect Latvia!

The exhibition is suitable for a wide audience – pupils, students, educators, industry professionals, and anyone who cares about nature and its future.

Admission to the exhibition opening is free. The exhibition at the Seaside Open-Air Museum is available from February 26 to March 22.
