Ventspils has become even more beautiful this spring – a new Sakura Alley has been created near Reņķa Garden, where 21 decorative mountain cherries have been planted (Prunus serrulata), which are currently waiting to bloom. The trees, which were delivered from Holland, will bring the romance, symbolism and blooming elegance characteristic of Japanese culture to the urban landscape.
The new avenue is created parallel to Sporta Street and features three different tree varieties – “Accolade” (8 trees), “Kanzan” (7 trees) and “Pink Perfection” (6 trees). This variety of varieties will ensure rich and nuanced flowering in various shades of pink, creating one of the most impressive spring walking areas in the city.
The planted trees were of considerable size – up to 5 meters high with a trunk circumference of 20–25 cm, thus they will provide a striking visual effect in the coming years. The sakura trees are not only aesthetically attractive, but also well suited to urban conditions, making them a sustainable investment in Ventspils' greenery.
To ensure the successful growth and longevity of the trees, Ventspils Landscaping Plant has carried out thorough preparatory work. Root protection films have been installed before planting. Root Block, but after planting, special watering bags are attached to the tree trunks.
These bags make tree care much easier – they are filled with water (approximately six to eight buckets), which then slowly and evenly seeps into the soil and reaches the roots. The water drains from the bag within about a day, ensuring optimal moisture supply. This method allows for more effective watering control, reduces water consumption and transportation costs, and is also more environmentally friendly. The bags are easy to put on and take off, and if necessary, they can be moved to other plantings. It is expected that, with careful use, they will last for several years, as they are made of durable and high-quality material.
The new Sakura Alley organically complements the landscape of Reņķis Garden, connecting the beauty of nature with the dynamics of the city. Already now, spring can be felt at every step in the park – like yellow butterflies blooming crocuses, while daffodils are still just budding. Soon, with the blooming of sakura, the splendor of bulbous flowers and the operation of the garden pond fountain, this place will become a particularly romantic and inspiring destination for walks.
Sakuras all over the world symbolize new beginnings, the fragility of life's beautiful moments, as well as a sense of togetherness and harmony. In Ventspils, the new alley will also become a place where these values meet the residents' love for a clean and green urban environment, inviting everyone to enjoy a blooming, peaceful and inspiring atmosphere in spring.
