With the favourite and truly most awaited national celebration just around the corner, the Ventspils Tourism Information Centre encourages you to take a look at the summary of the Midsummer’s Eve celebration to learn more about the most beautiful and in terms of traditions richest events in Ventspils and its surroundings.

The Midsummer’s Eve is a saint day for all,

As the guardian of barleys standing so tall

T-shirt printing workshop “A Quite Different Midsummer’s Eve”

On Tuesday, 21 June, at 17:30, the Ventspils Design Workshop RADE invites everyone to visit the T-shirt printing workshop “A Quite Different Midsummer’s Eve”. Join us and bring your friends with you! Pre-registration is required, as the number of participants is limited – MORE INFORMATION.

 

The Herb Day

On 21 June, at 19:00, the locals and city guests are welcome to visit the square Dzirnavu laukums, where a wide range of activities to celebrate the Herb Day are to take place. The visitors will be able to learn various Summer Solstice rituals, songs, dances, and games together with the dancers of the Ventspils folklore ensemble “Laipa”, the ensemble of middle-aged dancers “Kurzeme”, the senior dance ensemble “SenKurzeme”, and the dance ensemble “Liedags”. The folk-dance ensemble “Danču spēle” will ensure that everyone is having a great time and invite everyone to join in a dance. The visitors are also welcome to try their hand at making a wreath. They say that plants arranged in a circle are a symbol of blessing by the nature, beauty, power, and eternity – MORE INFORMATION.

Get ready for Midsummer together with Ventspils market!

June 23 from 8.00-15.00 Both delicacies for the festive table and Midsummer halls and gifts will be available at the Ventspils Old Town Market! From 11.00 - 13.00 the youngest visitors of the market will be able to participate in the creative workshop “Weaving of Midsummer Wreaths”. Shop with pleasure!

The Midsummer’s Eve

On the Midsummer’s Eve, on 23 June in the park Reņķa dārzs at 20:00, the Ventspils Theatre will entertain the audience with an open-air theatre performance – “The Sins of Trina” by Rūdolfs Blaumanis, characterised by loads of jokes, misunderstandings, and passion – MORE INFORMATION.

At 22:00, immediately after the jolly open-air theatre performance by the Ventspils Theatre, the festive bonfire will be lit in the park Reņķa dārzs, where everyone is welcome to dance until the sunlight. The band “Tirkizband” from Jelgava will entertain the audience with popular melodies, whereas the well-known DJ Lācis will make sure everyone is having a great time in this shortest night of the year. We have not forgotten about delicious meals and refreshments that will be available within the territory of the park Reņķa dārzs all night long. The entrance is free of charge – MORE INFORMATION.

 

VENTSPILS REGION

Tārgale: 19 June at 13:00 – preparation for the Midsummer’s Eve at the Livonian farmstead.

Pope: 19 June, from 22:00 to 22:30 – preparation for the Summer Solstice at the foot of the Pope Hillfort with songs, bonfire, snacks brought by the visitors, and a wide range of fun activities together with the folklore ensembles “Pūnika” and “Sītava” and folklorists from Tukums.

Jūrkalne: 21 June at 20:00 – the magic of the Summer Solstice night in the Meadow of Fire. Musical performances by the folk-rock band “Iļģi” and the Riga Dance Club – MORE INFORMATION.

Ziras: 22 June at 22:00 – preparation for the Midsummer’s Eve with “Open-Air Cinema”. The entrance is free of charge.

Zlēkas: 23 June at 21:00 – theatre performance of the Zlēkas amateur theatre “Margots” – “Looking for a Wife” by Zane Pamše. After the performance – an open-air ball with Endijs Krāmers. The entrance is free of charge.

Užava: 23 June at 21:00 – open-air ball “Let’s Celebrate in Užava” on the Užava open-air stage. Entrance: EUR 2.00.

To ensure that everyone is in good spirits when preparing for the Midsummer’s Eve, the authorities have already started decorating the city. The Town Hall Square will create a special atmosphere to capture the most precious moments. During the festivities, there will be thematic decorations set up, such as a white horse-drawn carriage richly decorated with oak tree branches, carrying flower boxes. A large Midsummer wreath, a symbolic decoration with inscription “LĪGO”, and other festive decorations will create festive mood on the square Lielais laukums.
