Elku liepa (Idol’s linden) in Usma
Idol’s linden is on the northwest bank of Lake Usma, on the cape called Elkurags (Idol’s Cape), in the old manor house’s yard, the former elementary school. The place has been quite well-known as an ancient cult site for more than 100 years. From the old Idol’s Linden’s sprouts nowadays there are only two sprouts left: the thickest one’s circuit is 4.1m, and the other one’s circuit is 2.8m. Nearby there are four younger sprouts growing, which circuits in autumn 2011 were 1.06m, 1.07m, 1.04m and 1.08m. All sprouts together form the sacred linden’s common clump.
The legends tell that in ancient times our forefathers under the linden have brought sacrifices for the souls of the dead.
